Heavenly tones, high spirits
By the time the 10 a.m. service ended on Feb. 19, members of the congregation were on their feet, clapping their hands and, in some cases, even dancing in the aisles.
This was no ordinary service — this was Jazz Sunday providing a Mardi Gras-like atmosphere on the final Sunday before Lent.
Cape Elizabeth cupid
To recognize and appreciate St. Valentine’s Day two days early, Stephen Bither was the Ambassador of Hearts before the 10 a.m. service on Feb. 12, handing out hearts to everyone who walked into the sanctuary.
Super Bowl fund-raising
The United Methodist Women once again prepared Italian Sandwiches on Sunday, Feb. 5 for members of the congregation to enjoy during their Super Bowl celebrations.
Mary Anne Champeon, Kathie Hackett, Gloria Kierstead and Joanne Scontras had an assembly line of sandwiches going, long before the 8 a.m. service even began.
Kathie reported that the UMW [...]
Diversity on Sunday morning
Celebration of the Chinese New Year found its way into our Sunday service on Jan. 29, thanks to Jo and Tim Stewart and their family.
As part of fellowship time following the 10 a.m. service, the Stewart family intoduced the 15-day celebration of the Year of the Black Water Dragon to our congregation with traditional holiday food [...]
In additional to singing at several residences, the carolers stopped at the Cape Memory Care Residence and offered four traditional carols while residents ate their dinners.
It was a heartfelt evening, both for the carolers and for those who opened their homes to receive the carols.
Merry Christmas!
Christmas cheer for church family
As has become its tradition at Christmas time, the United Methodist Women of our church spent Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 13, thinking about members of our church family who will have a difficult time getting out during this festive season.
As a result, the UMW gathering prepared 13 gift baskets for its program [...]
Singing in the season
More than a dozen members of our congregation took part in the first Cape Elizabeth Business Alliance’s Christmas Tree lighting on Friday evening, Dec. 9.
While families walked from one area business to another, taking part in cookie decorating and other festive activities, our carolers greeted participants for more than an hour.
For the [...]
Enjoying high spirits of the season
The success of the 2011 Jolly Snowman Christmas Fair can be measured in many ways. But perhaps none is better than this: With an hour still remaining before the fair closed, the kitchen had sold out of lobster rolls and hot dogs.
Bon appetit, fairgoers!
On a day of sunny skies and mild [...]
Taste of many nations from afar
If it had been a few months later, Saturday night’s Asian feast at Cape Elizabeth’s UMC could have been a delectable celebration of the Chinese New Year.
By the time the evening was over, however, it really didn’t matter what month it was — only that more than 100 people were treated [...]

Asian theme on Nov. 19
Stephen Bither and Jo Stewart have organized a special church supper for Saturday, Nov. 19, focusing on a wonderful variety of Asian cuisine. Unlike the traditional monthly bean supper, this Asian Food Festival will have only one seating, at 5:30 p.m., and all food will be provided by the hosts — no pot luck.
Jo is [...]
