Heavenly tones, high spirits
By the time the 10 a.m. service ended on Feb. 19, members of the congregation were on their feet, clapping their hands and, in some cases, even dancing in the aisles.
This was no ordinary service — this was Jazz Sunday providing a Mardi Gras-like atmosphere on the final Sunday before Lent.
Messages from the heart
On the occasion World Marriage Day was celebrated in homes, churches and communities throughout the world, our congregation had a firsthand experience with two experts on the subject, Bob and Linda Webster.
Bob and Linda have been involved in Marriage Enrichment, Celebrating Marriage, and are currently a Presenting Couple for Marriage Encounter, United Methodist. [...]
Cape Elizabeth cupid
To recognize and appreciate St. Valentine’s Day two days early, Stephen Bither was the Ambassador of Hearts before the 10 a.m. service on Feb. 12, handing out hearts to everyone who walked into the sanctuary.
A dialogue to honor MLK
“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
This quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the foundation for a spirited evening of “getting to know [...]
Song with a message
Adding some warmth to a frigid Sunday morning, Mariah Parker graced the congregation on Jan. 15 with a solo singing of Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” There was a message in the song and Mariah wanted to pass it on.
Thank you, Mariah:
Here are the lyrics:
She was driving last Friday on her [...]
Star-filled remembrance of Jesus’ birth
On the night of Jesus’ birth, it was a gleaming star in the night sky that led shepherds and wisemen to the stable in Bethlehem. For our church’s celebration of Christmas 2011, the star once again was a focal point, but in this case, it was a sanctuary filled with stars that [...]
Celebrate Jesus’ birth at three services

The first Christmas Eve service will be at 6 p.m., focusing on families and featuring the traditional Christmas pageant. This year’s pageant will have a theme of [...]
Crucial needs during season of giving
During both services on Sunday, Dec. 11, Mary Beth Sullivan, a multicultural case worker at the Preble Street Resource Center, delivered a poignant story to the congregation — the plight of the homeless in downtown Portland.
In place of the morning’s sermon, Mary Beth told the story of Preble Street and its [...]
Advent begins: The season of light
The first Sunday of Advent at the Cape Elizabeth UMC included the familiarity of traditions and the warming experience of sharing them with close friends and longtime church members.
The season officially began when Nancy Marsden held a candle over the Advent Wreath, introducing the first flicking light of the season, while her husband, [...]
Keeping dry for the blessing
A rainy afternoon proved to be no obstacle for our church’s renewal of its annual Dog Blessing, honoring the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
On Sunday, Oct. 2, the blessing was moved inside from its usual setting in the wooded outdoor chapel, but the dogs didn’t seem to mind and their owners were obviously grateful. The weather [...]
Members of the congregation gather following a special service in May to celebrate the church's 150th anniversary
