Crucial needs during season of giving
During both services on Sunday, Dec. 11, Mary Beth Sullivan, a multicultural case worker at the Preble Street Resource Center, delivered a poignant story to the congregation — the plight of the homeless in downtown Portland.
In place of the morning’s sermon, Mary Beth told the story of Preble Street and its [...]

Advent begins: The season of light
The first Sunday of Advent at the Cape Elizabeth UMC included the familiarity of traditions and the warming experience of sharing them with close friends and longtime church members.
The season officially began when Nancy Marsden held a candle over the Advent Wreath, introducing the first flicking light of the season, while her husband, [...]

Blessing of the dogs

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Keeping dry for the blessing
A rainy afternoon proved to be no obstacle for our church’s renewal of its annual Dog Blessing, honoring the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
On Sunday, Oct. 2, the blessing was moved inside from its usual setting  in the wooded outdoor chapel, but the dogs didn’t seem to mind and their owners were obviously grateful. The weather [...]

Welcome Back Sunday

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Celebrations and remembrances
While Sunday, Sept. 11 was the official opening of another year of Sunday School and a return of many families and friends from a summer of activities, it also was a time to reflect on the 10-year anniversary of terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and western Pennsylvania.
Rev. Ruth Morrison kept both thoughts [...]

There will be a memorial service for William G. (Bill) Wadman at our church on Saturday, July 9 at 3 p.m.

Easter morning 2011

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Joyous Celebrations
Easter morning began with the rising sun covered by off-shore fog and the piercing of the Two Lights fog horn periodically interrupting the Sunrise Service.
But at least it wasn’t snowing.
The early-morning worship, on the rocks by the Lobster Shack, took place against the backdrop of crashing waves from Saturday’s departing storm and drew a gathering [...]

Mardi Gras at CEUMC
The last Sunday before Lent once again was the occasion for Jazz Sunday at the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church, led by Stephen Bither, his small group of talented musicians, and Faith York and the church choir.
It was a rollicking morning of worship, music, fellowship and to top it off — a [...]
